Only Jesus Can Satisfy

In thinking about a recent and popular "Daniel Fast"...I am reminded of how hunger can move our desires from what we are wanting to more of what we are really needing. We don't often "need" unhealthy snacks or fast-food but our desires beg to differ. The basic diet supplement are factored into my eating habits, but my desires for things that are not really healthy most often take control.

A good exercise for me has been a drastic change in eating...or at least in the last few weeks. The result is that I found myself actually enjoying food that I would have otherwise "passed" on in order to satisfy the preferences of hot, spicy, meat...more meat...and more meat rather than fruits, veggies, etc. With well over one million eating establishment choices, it is no wonder our cravings get bent out of shape, not to mention a waistline. But we all know that.

Relating this buffet of choices and lack of real satisfaction ushered in a valid spiritual point that should at least be considered. Perhaps while we feast on everything which cannot satisfy, our spiritual starvation if continued is a warning sign of a greater issue. as C.S. Lewis writes, "If I find in myself a desire which no experience in the world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that I was made for another world."

A really good read is found in John 4 about Jesus talking to the woman at the well. The disciples were not really getting a clear understanding at that point, according to verses 31-33 and it is perhaps where we often find ourselves today. Looking in the wrong places for that which cannot really satisfy. (Isaiah 55:1-2)
